Planetary Motion

Since first launching Planetary Coffee in August of 2016, our shared existence as both business and life partners has been a whirlwind of activity. This has been especially true of the last year since we began operations of a full-service specialty coffee, tea, and espresso bar in downtown Traverse City, Michigan. We launched our coffee lounge in the State Street Marketplace, just after wrapping up our first full summer/fall season kicking it around the region in the Examiner. The transition brought with it many lessons and opportunities for growth. In order to staff both the shop and truck operations, we ventured into the hiring of our first employees. Bringing on staff enabled us to participate in some really groovy events over the summer and fall season with our coffee truck. We had a blast slinging coffee at the Sarah Hardy Farmers Market, as well as the opportunity to take part in providing coffee service for stellar wedding receptions held at two of Northern Michigan’s most stunning venues, Black Star Farms and the Watervale Inn.

Despite these gains, it quickly became clear to us we had situated ourselves in environment which was was not the right fit for the mission and culture of our company–a vision we have spent many years nurturing and honing together. So true to our wandering nature, not as fixed stars, but as planetary bodies constantly in motion, we have devised a plan to adjust our course. After months of locational soul searching, we are over-the-moon excited to announce that we have found a new home for our operations! We couldn’t be more stoked to have found a charming turn-of-the-century house which is zoned commercially on the east side of Elk Rapids!!! We will be in great company on this block situated alongside such rad neighbors as The Local, Kolu’s Eatery, and Ethanology. Our future coffee house is a place we feel will allow us to better embody what we have always envisioned Planetary Coffee, as an inclusive space that brings people together, and one which fosters creativity and community engagement.

At this point in our transitional crossroads, we want to humbly extend our thanks, love and appreciation to each and every one of the bodacious individuals we’ve had the opportunity to work with so far.  Our gratitude is infinite and challenging to express in full, but it’s certain our lives have been deeply enriched by all of you folks who we have come to hold near and dear to our hearts. We can’t thank you enough,  and we excitedly look forward to welcoming friends, both old and new alike, to the next generation of Planetary Coffee.  Please stay tuned for more details and updates as we get further along in the build-out process. We aim to be fully up and running with our new coffee house location at 135 Ames St. in Elk Rapids by early 2019.
